Sophia Mirzayee’s lived experiences as a first generation Afghan-Canadian have instilled in her, a strong commitment to human rights, activism, youth empowerment, and education.  Sophia’s academic career began in the human rights field. After she graduated with her B.A. in human rights at Carleton University, she began working in tandem for an international development agency and a youth organization. She realized that she wanted to find a way to combine her passion for human rights and social justice with her love for youth engagement and education. This compelled her to pursue a Master of Arts in Education at the University of Ottawa with a concentration on societies, cultures, and languages. Her thesis research, which is the first of its kind in Canada, focused on how partnerships between NGOs and schools can enrich global citizenship education. After completing her masters, Sophia worked for UNA-Canada’s Generation SDG program where she helped build youth capacity to take action on important issues in their local community. She now works as an Education and Youth Engagement Officer at AKFC while continuing to support the Generation SDG program and host UNA-Canada’s Between Two Flags (SDG Series) Podcast. She is an avid meditator, tea-drinker, book lover, and enjoys being in nature and connecting deeply with other people.
