“The best way to unleash chaos is to demand order.” -Joel Kabakov Bobbing in a sea of young faces in a lecture hall at U.C. Berkeley in the fabled 60’s, Joel Kabakov came face to face with the full force of the most potentially flagrant extremes of modern technology. Distinguished professor of physics, Edward Teller, father of the hydrogen bomb taught physics 101, the popular intro course for non science majors; this in juxtaposition with the proliferation of the robust anti-war movement on campus, in Bay Area streets and around the world. 📣 Ironically, Kabakov found the revered professor quite eloquent at explaining complex science like relativity, quantum mechanics and nuclear physics. ☢️ This because a seminal moment in Joel’s circuitous arrival at the concept and title: TECHNOFASCISM not just a clever word, but as an historical subject. With distinction, Joel went on to pursue a doctorate in music composition at Harvard where he won a graduate prize fellowship, plunged deep into technology (in the late 1960,s early 70’s), and was music education R&D director at Yamaha Corp. through the 80’s. as well as publishing collections of poems, numerous string quartets, orchestral pieces and live performances with his recent group Europatopia.
