Global Leader in Website Accessibility, Bespoke Wordpress Expertise, Google Demystifier, Public Speaker What is an Accessible Website'? Is it one that passes some automated checks and ticks a box? Or is it one the goes deeper and further than any automated checker can ever dream of and puts Accessibility at the heart of everything it does? I founded Access by Design in 2006, when we built our first website when Internet Explorer 6 was around. Designing an Accessible Website back then was certainly a challenge but it was a source of pride to us that our websites worked on different screen sizes back then, as well as giving people large text and dyslexia-friendly versions, 2011. The year responsive design came out. Now you could have a website that redesigned itself instantly, to suit the device it was being viewed on. So what did we do? Within weeks of Responsive Design techniques being discussed, we had combined it with all our knowledge of Accessible Website Design and created a World First: Responsive Accessible Design. What does this mean? It means every website we have designed and built since then will work on every device, every browser, and comes with several different accessible versions as standard. Google is now taking Accessibility seriously. The world is beginning to wake up to something we have known from the beginning: if your website works for people who have different abilities and has those needs to heart, everyone will benefit because they will all get a better experience! I spend some of my time doing Accessibility Audits. My 15 years of experience in this area means that I can offer insights that go way beyond others. I work alongside web development teams and help them to improve the accessibility of their websites, as well as giving our own clients a fantastic website experience. This is how I can, eventually, fulfill my dream: To change The World, One Website At A Time.
