I have been indirectly helping friends who are parents of children with special needs with their IEP questions. After 20+ years in the special education field both personally and professionally, I have been in meetings that have gone great, and other meetings that I just sat back and let the rest of the Team take the lead. We are all equal members of the Team. As a parent, we know our children well, we know their diagnosis and how it impacts them, and we know them outside of school. The educators know the curriculum and how our children complete their work in the classroom setting. It is time to be proactive and work collaboratively so our children can be as successful and independent as they can be. I keep looking back at my 1st grade experience which has also made me passionate about making sure no other child feels like I did; embarrassed, a failure, or frustrated.
